A Humanities Girl in an Analytical World

Although my background was in humanities, I find myself playing a numbers game in the world of analytics. I graduated from NC State in May 2023 with a degree in Political Science with a concentration in International Politics.

You might ask yourself,
“Is it possible to succeed in this program without a STEM background?”
The answer is: “Yes!”

When I first thought about applying to this program, I was nervous because I didn’t have the typical STEM major that many others had; however, I believe my humanities background has given me a leg up in the program.

Don’t let your non-STEM major discourage you from pursuing this degree.
Sometimes, having a non-technical degree is even better because it helps with diverse thought processes.

Throughout the summer, we worked on a team project where we analyzed airline data, mainly dealing with airlines, airports, and delays. My background helped with this project because I brought a new perspective to my team. In my undergraduate years, I had learned about government funding and earmarked bills, which my team utilized to enhance our project.

While my experience is just one of many, no matter your background, feel encouraged to apply to this program.

Your background will help you gain insights and bring diverse thoughts to projects.

As for the coding and mathematical concepts, you can start working on them now to be prepared. Everyone at the Institute is here to help you succeed, so take the chance and apply today!
