The CDC took place October 8-9 at UNC Chapel Hill. Most of us were participating in our first in-person data hackathon, and we knew that teams from the MSA had great success here in the past.

We were presented with several datasets to choose from at the start, and we decided to go with one that provided details on storm damage from 1950 to 2022. We spent the first few hours analyzing the data and determining which lane to present our findings. We capitalized on the prior experience of some of our team members with Python and Tableau.

We occasionally needed a break, and the CDC had planned events in collaboration with the sponsors. Several workshops from organizations such as CapTech and Dataiku piqued our interest, and we learned some valuable concepts. There was free food and snacks for all participants along the way to keep us energized.

Apart from the few hours of sleep we could get, we worked on the slides simultaneously, keeping the “Bottom Line up Front” principle in mind. We gave an 8-minute presentation outlining our conclusions and recommendations.
