Navigating Around Raleigh for Newbies

It can be very exciting to move to a new location for some people, but also a bit overwhelming. After all, you’re in an unfamiliar area, with no sense of comfort and a completely different environment. However, this change brings a multitude of opportunities for personal growth and cultural exploration. Embracing the unfamiliar can lead to forming diverse connections and gaining a broader perspective on life.

Navigating the unfamiliar landscapes of a new location may seem like a daunting task, but it’s a golden ticket to uncovering unique traditions, indulging in local cuisines, and engaging in social activities beyond the classroom. To make your exploration smoother, here’s a curated guide featuring various places to discover, spanning a diverse array of topics!

Grabbing a Bite

  1. Sushi Nine
Group of students eating sushi

This spot is perfect for those who want something close to The Institute. Sushi Nine is located right off Western Boulevard and runs a special where they do BOGO-free rolls EVERY DAY, so you can dive into a world of flavors without breaking the bank! If you are interested in a to-go order, don’t fret. You can receive 50% off rolls!

  1. Coco Bongo
Mexican food on the table

Who doesn’t love some free chips and salsa? Coco Bongo is a staple restaurant that many students go to. This is located on Hillsborough Street near Main Campus. They have a special on Tuesdays where you get cheap tacos and lunch specials. If you’re looking for a solid margarita, this is also a great place to choose!

  1. A Place at the Table

This restaurant isn’t just your typical place to eat. Not only do they have excellent breakfast and lunch options, but what really draws you in is the mission of this place. A Place at the Table, located in downtown Raleigh, is a nonprofit cafe focusing on a “pay what you can” concept. You can pay the suggested price, donate an additional amount, and even offer to volunteer to help pay for your meal. The energy in this place is so positive and heartwarming!

Study Places

  1. Hunt Library

Conveniently located near the Institute, Hunt Library is the perfect spot to complete an assignment or prepare for an exam. You can even use the NC State University Libraries’ website to reserve a room for yourself or your homework group. There are multiple floors and a specific area for graduate students only!

  1. Lucky Tree

If you’re looking for a cozy and funky coffee shop to get some work done, look no further than Lucky Tree. You’ll find it on Hillsborough Street near Meredith College. There are great drink options, and I highly recommend pairing the tomato basil bites with it. You can also shop around and purchase local art within the coffee shop!

  1. Brecotea

Looking for something other than coffee? Brecotea in Cary offers a range of options, such as milk, yogurt, fruit tea, and a bakery with delicious desserts and small bites. This is also a place with a large selection of seating, so you can easily find a spot to study!

Social Things to Do

  1. Going to a Football Game

Get into the school spirit this fall by joining in on the excitement of tailgating and cheering on your team at the game! If you’re a grad student, snagging a ticket is usually pretty easy. It’s especially important if you’re from a different place – doing so helps you feel more connected to your college and community. It’s a super fun way to kick off your fall semester!

  1. Hitting up Trivia Night

Going to trivia night is a great way to bond with your friends, homework team, or practicum group! Sammy’s and Red Line offer trivia on Tuesdays, with a mix of various topics such as pop culture, geography, and even a musical round. Sammy’s (at Mission Valley on Avent Ferry Road) also offers a variety of food and drink options, and Red Line (on Horne Street near the Hill Library on Main Campus) has various board games you can play for free and offers snacks!

  1. The North Carolina State Fair

How convenient is the State Fair? It’s only 10 minutes from campus. This is an opportunity you can’t miss! Occurring around the middle of October, for approximately two weeks, Raleigh will have various rides, games, and unique food to choose from! Pro tip: Go on a Thursday and donate cans of food as your admission fee! The best time to go is during the week in the middle of the day or right when it opens to avoid the rush!

Raleigh is an area full of many fun activities and delicious food. Try something new and connect to your new home!
